Wells on Target as Luton Win, Narrow Defeat for Trott's Cardiff
Wednesday, September 02, 2026

Nahki Wells struck his fifth goal of the campaign as Luton Town produced the ideal response to their weekend setback with a clinical 2-0 victory over Stockport County under the Kenilworth Road lights. Having shipped five goals in a heavy defeat at Mansfield on Sunday, the Hatters answered emphatically in front of their home support, pairing a resolute defensive display with decisive second-half finishing to register their first home win of the season. Following a tightly contested, goalless opening 45 minutes, Luton unlocked the visiting backline when playmaker Kasey Palmer carved open the defence to find Harrison Ashby. After Ashby's stinging drive was parried by Stockport goalkeeper Fraser Horsfall, Bermudian international Wells reacted fastest, turning the rebound home from close range. Callum Marshall later added a second to seal the points and cap a satisfying evening for Rob Edwards' side. There was less joy for fellow Bermudian Nathan Trott, whose Cardiff City side slipped to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday evening. An open, end-to-end start saw both sides trade opportunities in a breathless battle for early control. However, QPR ultimately proved more ruthless in the final third, edging ahead and holding off a late Cardiff push to leave Trott and the Bluebirds empty-handed on the road.
