Bermudian golfers have made a positive start to their campaigns at the Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championships in South Carolina, highlighted by top-ten opening rounds from Tracy Burgess, Ann Symonds, and Ann Mitchell. Burgess produced the standout performance of the opening day for the Bermuda contingent, carding a sub-80 round of 79 to sit tied for fifth in Flight 52 of the Women's Gross division. In Flight 53 (Women 59 & Under), Ann Symonds positioned herself well among the early contenders after carding an 82 to finish the opening round tied for ninth, while compatriot Angela Cook posted a 91 to finish tied for 22nd. Senior Women (60 & Above): Ann Mitchell put together a solid opening 18 holes, carding a 90 to sit tied for eighth in Flight 55. Mid Senior Men (60–69): Antony Than and Dave Abraham matched each other shot-for-shot in Flight 22, both firing identical rounds of 83 to finish the day tied for 18th. Senior Men (50–59): Richard Marriott carded an 86 in a competitive Flight 9 field, leaving him tied for 49th heading into the second round. Super Senior Men (70–79): Gary Venning opened his tournament in Flight 44, recording a 105 to occupy 48th place.
